Huijun Chen (b.1994, Guangzhou, China), graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2020 with a Master’s degree and National scholarship for Postgraduates as well as a scholarship from CSC (China Scholarship Council). She is currently studying MA Contemporary Arts China at the School of Art, Birmingham City University, UK.

 

Before I intended to transfer my practice from traditional ink art to contemporary, my work was all about representing modern life in the form of ink paintings on rice paper. I was inspired by my studies during the MA Contemporary Arts China at Birmingham City University and experimented with ink art that combined different forms of expression such as installation, video and performance.

 

Since my arrival in the UK, the pandemic and loneliness have driven me to pay extra attention to the mundane and ordinary - the people I meet each day, the common everyday objects and so on. In my recent practical research, I have focused on the relationship between people, cities and objects.

 

Most of my recent ink works are presented on plaster. Not only does plaster remind me of rice paper, a material I used to use for ink painting, but I can also create three-dimensional objects that fit the theme of my work on the plaster before I paint, which would not be possible if I were to work with other materials
